The fish rots from the head, as the old saying goes… So what does this mean? In my experience it means that whatever the problems or issues that are showing up in your business they are a direct reflection of you as a leader and your values.

You see we get what we focus on! Tony Robbins says where attention goes, energy flows. So, if you are constantly seeing all the mistakes and negatives of your team, guess what, you are going to get more of that behavior. If you are pissed off because you can’t rely on your people to take responsibility, then it’s because you are not letting them take responsibility. You don’t trust them, and they know it. If you are not making any money, and you are doing all the work yourself and you are annoyed about it then guess who is at fault? Not your team, it’s you!

I meet many business owners who are completely in a rut. They are overworked, exhausted, annoyed with their team for not caring about their business as much as they do. They are controlling, fault finding, workaholics who are a slave to their business. I know all this because I was you! I have been where you are, but I had to learn that in order for my business and team to function I had to lead from the front and change my ways. I had to look hard in the mirror and go, you know what! I created this beast and I can turn it around if I change the way I think, behave and act. And that is what I did.

And all change starts with awareness! For me it was the realization that all my values around career and business stemmed from me moving away from what I didn’t want! This means that most of the time when we are focusing on what we don’t want, we get more of that. For me it was all about independence because I wanted to do things my way – which meant I wanted to control everything. Because I was moving away from what I didn’t want I actually had less control and it was making me crazy.

So let’s do a task to get you to start thinking about this in the context of your business or your career. List down what is most important to you in regards to your career and business. Not what you like, but what is most important. For me it’s:

  1. Freedom
  2. Team
  3. Money
  4. Fulfillment
  5. Making a difference
  6. Fun
  7. Challenge
  8. Connectedness

Then for each of these write down WHY these are so important to YOU and watch out for your language (are you moving away from what you don’t want, or positively moving towards what you actually want?). Newsflash, most people unconsciously are moving away, not towards! So don’t be alarmed if its all away! For me it was, and it was a massive wake up call for me, it was an ah-ha moment! Because if we are moving away from what we want, guess what we self-sabotage all the way!

I’ll give you an example my first value was Freedom, for me this meant independence, autonomy etc. For me this was important because if I didn’t have the freedom to do what I wanted then I felt stifled, bored, controlled. I used language like well if I don’t have freedom to do things my way I feel unhappy and frustrated. All away away away. And guess what I unknowingly created a business where I had less freedom than everyone else in my business. I was working 5 days a week and all my team worked part-time, I worked the long hours, did all the travel and was really bitter and upset about it. Make sense?

So, you are probably asking so now I know that all my values are away from, what do I do about it? The answer is, get a Coach (preferably someone who is trained in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and start working on yourself to change all the away to towards. A coach will help you understand your beliefs and values and unlock what needs to change in order for you to create the business and life that you want.
